16 random things you may not have known about me

I saw Cristin's blog today and thought I'd borrow her idea...

Many of you have probably been tagged on Facebook and asked to write 16 or 25 random things about yourself. I think it started with 16, but now, it's up to 25. I got roped in when it was just 16...so, I'll share those with you...feel free to respond with 16 random things about yourself...or 25...or 3...whatev!

1. I am a hotel snob.

2. I love The N.

3. During the week, my alarm goes off at 4:21 a.m.

I got nothin' for ya...

I'm busy pretty much all day every day, and yet, I can't come up with anything interesting to tell you. I felt like I should tell you something though...since it's been over a week. I was trying to be a better blogger, but it may just not be my forte.

  • Note to readers: forte - pronounced FORT...not FOR-TAY...the second pronunciation is what you have in music. The first is the one associated with a skill. Seriously. Most people do not know this. The second pronunciation has become so common when referring to someone's skill that you probably think I'm crazy for saying it the other (correct!) way. I don't care. I know I'm right. That's all that matters.

I finally found my Wii and got it and the Wii Fit hooked up earlier this week. I am loving it! I'm not sure I enjoy it telling me every day that I'm unbalanced, but whatever. I guess I already knew that anyway! I'm really focused on the Fit part right now, although I have done a little of the tennis and a little of the bowling...I'm much better at the bowling than the tennis. I'm becoming a hula hoop expert though...which is funny...considering there's no actual hoop involved...

Is any of this interesting? I really don't know. It's just what's happening. It's nothing to make you think deep or ponder the inner workings of your life. And if it is? Well, I think I'm concerned about you.

I basically have nothing for you today...maybe I'll think of something interesting later in the weekend...don't hold your breath though...

Motoring Mobile Phone Menaces

So, there's a law in California about talking on the phone without a headset in the car, right? Yes. That's right. There's an actual LAW people. Do you care? Are you above it all? Do you have a never-ending supply of money that will allow you to pay off your tickets should you actually get stopped and get one?

Clearly the answers to these questions are: No. Yes. Duh.

Seriously though. I can't even tell you how many people I see blatantly ignoring this law every day. And, as prior to the passing of this law, these people CAN NOT DRIVE WHILE TALKING ON THE PHONE!!!!! As one of my favorite columnists said a number of years ago about people who just don't get it, these folks are oblivions...and are clearly im-por-tants (yes, said just like that). They are above the law...sooooo much important than the rest of us on the road. It's all about them.

Well ya know what? I don't like it. But who can I call? Ghostbusters? I'd probably have more luck with them than trying to make a case for making the law a primary offense, rather than a secondary one. What was the point of this law? Yes, a lot of people are getting tickets, but it sure seems to me that if the state were really serious about it, it should be a primary offense and carry a stiffer fine.

Come on people. Are you really so important that you can't put an earpiece in your ear or get a hands free speaker device of some sort? Or, heaven forbid, can
you wait until you arrive at your destination before calling your BFF about nothing of real interest? Who is this important? Seriously. I really want to know.

Clearly one VERY important person today was the guy driving the AT&T truck that blocked an entire lane because he decided too late that he needed to get in the turn lane instead of going straight. As if this action weren't annoying enough, when I got close enough (as he was about to get into MY turn lane), I noticed that he was on the phone. Nice AT&T. Good to know your employees are driving safely. Somehow I feel even better about my switch to Comcast.

**sigh**

The thing is, there are so many things that cause us distraction while driving...I'm not sure we could ever ban things to the point where every driver would truly be focused and safe, but every little bit has to help, right?

I have a large fear that the next thing to go will be the iPod...as in, you can't touch it while driving or something...that would
momentarily hurt me, but I think at the end of the day, I would just ensure that I had long enough play lists to last for my entire journey. Wouldn't I? I'd like to think so.

I've had no real issue with the phone thing...although I didn't realize how much I checked email while sitting at lights until that sort of activity was recently banned too. I've had some itchy fingers, but I'm getting used to it. See? It can be done people!!!

Alright. I guess I'm done with my rant for today. I was just so annoyed with that AT&T guy today...I felt I had to say something.

Happy Motoring!

Oh...that's my mom to the left...not her car, but she still looks good!!

It'll be a day like this one...

...when the world caves in...when the world caves in...when the world caves in...

This line is from a Switchfoot song called The Blues, and while it's a bit dark, I thin
k it has some of the most telling lyrics about our world today...what we're doing...where we're going. Whenever it comes on my pod, I stop what I'm doing and listen to the words. I don't do that enough with music...but maybe that's because so few lyrics move me like these. Take a listen (or a read) and let me know what you think.

Ya know, Switchfoot has some of the best lyrics around...check out a few samples:
  • On Fire: I'm standing on the edge of me...standing on the edge of everything I've never been before
  • Redemption: With my fist down at your feet, I was running out of mysteries
  • Gone: She said he said live like no tomorrow...every day we borrow brings us one step closer to the edge (infinity)
I could pull a line out of every one of their songs. Just check 'em out...listen or read the lyrics online. Maybe you're already a fan...yay you!

As an added piece of Switchfoot info, I have seen them in concert eight times. If you haven't seen them, do it. They rock
hard in concert!!!

Matt Nathanson is another who has some amazing lyrics that I will stop in mid-stream and listen to...a few samples:
  • Little Victories: I'll be awful sometimes...weakened to my knees
  • All We Are: It's hard to change the way you lose if you think you've never won
  • Car Crash: I wanna feel the car crash, 'cause I'm dyin' on the inside
Oh, and Matt? Yeah. I've seen him five times in concert and met him twice (which, if you read this anti-blog often, you already knew...).

Whose lyrics do you stop and listen to no matter where you are? If you can't think of anyone, then you need to stop reading right now and go listen to some tunes!!! Get back to me...
